Extra challenges for ages 10 and up

Finished the book and hungry for more? These stretch activities go a step further, for older explorers or anyone who wants a tougher challenge. They use the same no-screen approach: paper, pencil, and thinking.

  • Design a decision tree. Pick an everyday choice, like what to wear tomorrow, and map every IF-THEN branch a bot would need to make it. How many rules before it can handle rain, cold, and a birthday party at once?
  • Be the training data. Draw ten cats and ten dogs, then swap with a friend. Which drawings would confuse a computer, and why? This is exactly how AI ends up mistaking a burrito for a puppy.
  • Prompt like an engineer. Write the worst possible question, then rewrite it three times, each version clearer than the last. Compare what changed. Clear thinking makes clear prompts.
  • Spot the bias. If a bot only ever saw pictures of one kind of house, what would it get wrong about yours? Write down three things it would miss.
  • Teach it back. Explain how AI learns to someone younger than you, using no technical words at all. Explaining is the real test of understanding.

More advanced worksheets are being added here over time. Ask us to keep you posted when new ones land.

For parents & teachers

Short chapters, big conversations. A few ways to get the most from the book:

  • Read together or solo — chapters are short by design: read-aloud for younger explorers, independent reading for ages 9 and up.
  • Talk about it — each chapter's recap makes a great dinner-table question: "Where did you spot AI today?"
  • Do the worksheets on paper — the activities are deliberately screen-free.
  • Practice the safety rules out loud — check surprising answers, keep personal info private, ask a trusted adult. Your brain is the boss!
